The Lovers is the 6th card of the major arcana. The number 6 is harmony and positive feelings that are reciprocated. Lovers can be associated with the Star Sign Gemini, the sign of duality and perspectives, of mental multiplicity.
Although ‘The Lovers’ is perceived to be associated with romantic union and passion, the tarot card has a deeper meaning and understanding. ‘The Lovers’ is also highly symbolic of the choices one makes, the dilemma one comes across in making choices and most importantly, analysing the pros and cons of each choice. This major arcana is very relevant to Geminis owing to the twin personality of individuals who are born during 20th May and 20th June.
In readings, ‘The Lovers’ is greatly suggestive of communication between two individuals, two souls and/or two ideas. It signifies the power of exchanging effective communication while having a clear goal in mind. The card is an imagery representation of Geminis and is particularly relevant to Geminis who do seem to be vocal about their ideas and way of operation.
It is one of the most powerful card in the major arcana as it exercises the power of a universal energy guiding a person’s actions and attitudes towards an impending decision or an existing phenomenon.
The male represents your worldly, rational self. This is the part that works in the "real world." The male part of the self wants to mentally figure everything out with a rational explanation. He fears the unknown and yet is strangely attracted to the mysteries embodied by the female on the card. Status, strength, and reason matter to him.
The female represents the psyche, your emotional depth, your capacity to feel. She is sensitive and kind. She loves beauty and comfort. She feels compassion and wants all things to go smoothly. She has the tendency to "avoid conflict" at all costs.
The angel represents your higher-self, your super-consciousness. He looks down on the different part of the self with compassion, acceptance and perspective. There is no judgment in the angel's face, only unconditional love and acceptance.
The gazing figures on the Lovers card show a formula for inner peace. The "external" worldly self (male) must know his real feelings (female) to find peace and harmony.
The lovers card is the raw essence of love. We must learn to love ourselves before we can truly give openly and wholly to another. Yet, we also learn about ourselves through relationships with others and/or we can learn love within the relationships. Again, the choice is ours.
Today, it's time to love yourself. You may have to dig deep within to find it, but it's there, patiently waiting. Look at who you are with the eyes of your inner-angel. Then look at the other people in the world with those same eyes. This perspective will reveal a lot to you.
